No less than six Kia vehicles have been awarded top safety pick ratings from America’s leading car safety experts, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The models awarded 2020 top safety pick ratings were the Telluride, Sorento, Sportage, Stinger, Soul and Forte.
Top
of the awards was the 2020 Kia Telluride, which received ratings as ‘good’ in
all six of IIHS’s crashworthiness tests. It also received an ‘acceptable’
rating for headlights. Both front crash prevention systems (vehicle-to-vehicle
and vehicle-to-pedestrian) were deemed superior, with the ease of use of the
child seat anchors said to be ‘acceptable’.
Success Abounds for the 2020 Kia Forte and the 2020 Kia Stinger
The 2020 Kia Forte 4-door sedan received a ‘good’ rating in all six categories. In addition, it received an ‘acceptable’ rating for the ease of use for child seat anchors, plus ‘superior’ for both the standard and optional systems for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention. It was deemed ‘advanced’ for the optional vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system.
In
the large car section, the 2020 Kia Stinger 4-door hatchback was the only
vehicle to be awarded a top safety pick. It too was rated ‘good’ on all six
crashworthiness categories, but only marginal for child seat anchors each of
use. The front crash prevention vehicle-to-vehicle system was deemed superior,
and the front crash prevention vehicle-to-pedestrian advanced. Both these
systems are optional.
Moving on to the Small SUVs section, the Kia Sportage 4-door SUV was also rated good in all six crashworthiness tests.
For the purpose of the IIHS ratings, all vehicles are tested based on the six following criteria ratings:
· Small overlap front: driver-side
· Small overlap front: passenger-side
· Moderate overlap front
· Side
· Roof strength
· Head restraints & seats
In order to receive a top safety pick or a top safety pick+, a vehicle must attain a minimum rating of ‘good’ in all size categories. Vehicles are also rated for crash avoidance and mitigation via headlights and front crash prevention, both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian for standard and optional systems. The IHHS has been performing these safety evaluations since 2006.
“Kia
is committed to building the safest vehicles possible,” said Michael Cole, the
president of Kia Motors America. “These six TSP ratings from IIHS reflect that
commitment and reaffirms Kia’s continued effort to strive for safety improvement
and advancement in every model we produce.”
